Consumer preferences have clearly shifted towards sustainable, environmentally-friendly products. This trend has extended to the world of wine, where more & more retailers appreciate the practicality & eco responsibility of Bag-in-Box (BIB) wines
Currently six of our CAMAS single varietal wines are available in the BIB format with a view to having the entire range of all eleven wines available within the next year. This modern format offers exceptional quality & advanced ecological benefits from production to end disposal.
Retailing wine in this format offers a 25 - 30% reduction in costs against the traditional bottle format on like for like product. These cost savings are largely due to packaging & transport costs.
Add in the cost of glass disposal against fully recyclable, fold down packaging & the cost savings are in excess of 30%.
It allows retailers to serve a premium product that offers outstanding value with Gross Profit Margins in excess of 70% whilst maintaining modest retail pricing.
Our BIB format preserves the wine in perfect conditions: undoubtedly the most important issue for wine lovers. The wine is fully protected, no light coming in & combined with the tap system & a contracting bag it's impossible for the oxygen to get in & create an oxidized wine. Whereas this will occur with an open bottle within a few days, BIB product can be consumed in optimal conditions, with all its properties intact (colour, aromas, flavours) up to six weeks after it was opened.
The wine industry is rooted in ancient traditions & it is understandable there is resistance to some techniques & packaging that are perceived to break the classic wine codes & the markets the industry wishes to protect.
The perception that BIB product is inferior is non sense. We have been here before, most recently when screw-tops replaced corks. BIB products are well established in other countries throughout the world. In the spiritual home of wine, the French have embraced the BIB format to the extent sales in volume are expected to reach up to 50% of the market share.
In the UK BIB sales through major retailers by volume rose by nearly 9% from 2022 to 2023.
